M.Sc. Steeven Verdezoto Intriago, Research Technician I at FICT and active member of the EC-Water Academic and Research Network, has completed a distinguished research stay at the “Michael Polanyi Surface Phenomena Laboratory” at the National University of Colombia (UNAL) in Medellín. This activity is part of the joint project "CO2-Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) for CCUS in Colombia and Ecuador," aimed at promoting collaborative research lines between both institutions.

Stay in Medellín: A Strong International Link

The stay took place between November 24 and December 12, 2025, marking a milestone in the scientific collaboration between the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNAL). During this period, M.Sc. Verdezoto Intriago worked closely with the laboratory’s research team, strengthening the academic and scientific ties between Ecuador and Colombia in the field of energy research.

Participation in the XI Summer School on Low-Carbon Technologies and CCUS

As part of his stay, M.Sc. Verdezoto Intriago actively participated in the 11th edition of the Summer School on low-carbon technologies and carbon capture and storage (CCUS), a high-level academic event held in Medellín, Colombia. The Summer School has established itself as a key space for training researchers, professionals, and students in sustainable energy technologies and innovative solutions to mitigate climate change.

During the event, topics of great relevance were addressed, such as carbon capture technologies, CO2 use in industrial processes, and geological CO2 storage. M.Sc. Verdezoto Intriago had the opportunity to delve into these advances, participating in practical workshops and roundtables that facilitated the exchange of ideas between international experts. Additionally, the event promoted networking and international collaboration, fostering the creation of new research partnerships and the development of joint solutions for sustainability.

Promotion of Research and Sustainability

Participation in the Summer School not only allowed M.Sc. Verdezoto Intriago to deepen his research area but also provided him with the opportunity to contribute to strengthening research and sustainability capacities. Such academic exchanges are essential for advancing the development of technologies that promote the energy transition toward more sustainable systems, particularly in the context of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and carbon storage—areas of significant relevance to both countries.

Institutional Commitment to International Academic Cooperation

M.Sc. Steeven Verdezoto’s stay at UNAL highlights ESPOL’s commitment to international academic cooperation and scientific development in strategic areas. These collaborations, uniting prestigious academic institutions in the region, are crucial for addressing global challenges related to sustainability and climate change, further strengthening ESPOL’s role as a leading institution in research and the development of innovative solutions.

These initiatives further consolidate the relationship between ESPOL and international universities, opening new doors for future joint research and collaborations that will benefit both Ecuador and the broader region.

In conclusion, the research stay at the National University of Colombia and participation in the 11th Summer School on Low-Carbon Technologies and CCUS are clear examples of how international scientific cooperation strengthens the development of new technologies and drives the move toward a more sustainable future for both countries.
