Strategic Alliance: ESPOL and the University of Catania

The Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) at ESPOL hosted Ph.D. Marisa Giuffrida, a prominent researcher from the University of Catania (Italy). This research stay is the result of a solid academic alliance between both institutions, aimed at enhancing scientific production and international mobility.

About the University of Catania: Founded in 1434, it is the oldest university in Sicily and one of Italy's leading research institutions. With a historical prestige in the areas of volcanology and geosciences, it is an ideal partner for studying the volcanic origin of the Galapagos Islands.

Applied Science in the Galapagos Archipelago

During her stay, Dr. Giuffrida worked closely with the research team led by Ph.D. Maurizio Mulas and M.Sc. Daniel Garcés, within the framework of the Climred and Peligal projects.

The central focus of her work was the mineralogical study of rocks on Santa Cruz Island. This analysis seeks to decipher complex geological processes to understand the origin and evolution of the archipelago, providing high-value data for the global geoscientific community.

Towards Consolidated Internationalization

Beyond the technical results, this visit allowed for the projection of future growth opportunities, such as:

  • Joint Research: Continuity in geology and risk mitigation projects.

  • Student Exchange: Opening programs for students and faculty from both ESPOL and Catania to conduct academic stays in Europe and Ecuador.

  • Institutional Strengthening: Consolidation of FICT as an international research hub for Earth Sciences.

Through these actions, FICT reaffirms its commitment to high-level science and global cooperation, positioning ESPOL as a leader in the study of Ecuador's natural systems.
