The Faculty of Geosciences Engineering at the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) continues to strengthen its international presence through academic cooperation programs. On this occasion, a distinguished student from the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm University in Germany has been selected to undertake a research internship at FICT with a full scholarship awarded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of the prestigious RISE Worldwide program’s 2026 call for applications.

The student was awarded this full scholarship after applying for the research project offered by FICT as part of this international call for proposals. During her stay, she will conduct research under the supervision of Dr. Priscila Valverde Armas (ESPOL), Dr. Leonardo Gutiérrez (Ghent University), and Dr. Jacquelin Cobos (University of Bergen). The microproject she will work on is titled “CO₂ concentration from seawater using bipolar membrane electrodialysis for injection into geological formations,” linked to the CCUS research projects and “Design and application of advanced technologies for water treatment.”

During her stay in Guayaquil, the student will participate in scientific activities focused on developing innovative technologies for CO₂ capture and management, thereby helping to strengthen academic and scientific cooperation between Ecuador and Germany.

The RISE Worldwide program promotes international mobility for students in engineering and the natural sciences by connecting outstanding students from German universities with research projects proposed by academic institutions around the world. In this year’s edition, 559 students applied to 515 research projects offered by universities and research centers in 53 countries, and 173 students were ultimately selected to receive the scholarship, demonstrating the program’s high level of competitiveness in the selection of both students and projects at the international level.

FICT's participation in this program reaffirms the institution's commitment to internationalization, scientific research, and the integration of international talent into national research groups.
