Moving toward a college that reduces waste generation and promotes proper waste management involves fostering responsible habits and creating opportunities for the community to understand how their daily actions can contribute to a more sustainable campus.
In this context, faculty, administrative staff, and support staff from the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) participated in a talk on the Inclusive Recycling Program and the various sustainability initiatives led by ESPOL’s Sustainability Office. The event was led by Ana María Melendres, M.Sc., a sustainability analyst, who presented the actions the institution is promoting to foster a culture of sustainability and shared responsibility on campus.
During the session, the importance of properly sorting waste at the source—especially within academic units—was emphasized, as well as the proper use of designated collection points and containers. These practices help maximize the use of recyclable materials and reduce the amount of waste that ultimately requires disposal.
The talk also provided insight into the social component of the Inclusive Recycling Program, which integrates the management of recyclable waste with the work of grassroots recyclers. In this way, recycling is approached not only in terms of its environmental contribution but also through recognition of the people who are part of this chain and the social value associated with their work.
This event also served to reinforce the role that each member of the FICT community plays in fostering more responsible practices, recognizing that proper waste management begins with simple decisions such as reducing waste, sorting materials correctly, and disposing of them in designated areas.
Through these actions, the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) continues to promote sustainable practices within its community and contribute to more responsible management of the waste generated at the academic unit.
