The Faculty of Earth Sciences Engineering (FICT) at ESPOL participated virtually in the 5th Latin American Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water, and Environment Systems (SDEWES), held from January 18 to 21, 2026, in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. This international event brought together researchers, academics, and professionals to discuss sustainable and innovative solutions in the fields of energy, water, and the environment.

The participation took place within the framework of academic and research activities promoted by the FICT, strengthening ESPOL's institutional presence in high-impact scientific spaces.

Academic and scientific contribution

During the conference, the research work entitled “Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Wastewater Treatment Plant Configurations Considering Silver Nanoparticle Removal,” developed as part of an ongoing FICT research project, was shared virtually. The study addresses a comparative life cycle analysis of different wastewater treatment plant configurations, incorporating plant operation and sustainability criteria.

The SDEWES conference has proceedings indexed in international databases such as Scopus and Web of Science, highlighting the academic relevance of the event and its impact on the dissemination of scientific knowledge.

Institutional and educational impact

Virtual participation in this type of international event allows FICT to strengthen its lines of research, update knowledge on strategic issues, and transfer this learning to the classroom, contributing to the training of students with a comprehensive vision of engineering oriented toward sustainable development. This experience reinforces ESPOL's commitment to quality research, academic internationalization, and the articulation of engineering with global challenges in energy, water, and the environment.
