Presentation of the Results of the GEPOA Project to Strengthen Environmental Monitoring in Ecuador

The Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL), through its research team at the Geoinformation and Remote Sensing Laboratory, presented the results of the Ecuadorian Geoportal for Ocean-Atmospheric Parameters (GEPOA) at an event held on July 30, 2026, at the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT). The initiative integrates satellite data on sea surface temperature and atmospheric variables for the continuous monitoring of Ecuador’s Marine Protected Areas.

During the event, the methodology developed for the project was presented, which includes the download and processing of satellite data, the construction of a spatial geodatabase, and the development of an interactive visualization platform. Additionally, the main results achieved, the impacts identified, and the limitations encountered during the geoportal’s implementation process were presented.

The GEPOA project serves as a tool that provides strategic information for the early detection of extreme weather events, such as El Niño and La Niña, thereby strengthening environmental monitoring of marine protected areas and contributing supporting information for environmental management and public policy formulation.

La presentación de resultados reunió a integrantes del proyecto y miembros de la comunidad universitaria, quienes conocieron los avances alcanzados y su aporte al fortalecimiento de la investigación aplicada en el estudio de los sistemas océano-atmosféricos del Ecuador.

As part of the event, the research team honored doctoral candidates Divar Castro Rodas and David Freire Granda, who will begin a doctoral fellowship in Brazil starting in August. This achievement represents a new step in their research training and demonstrates ESPOL’s commitment to developing scientific talent and promoting the international visibility of its researchers.

The presentation of results brought together project members and members of the university community, who learned about the progress made and its contribution to strengthening applied research in the study of Ecuador’s ocean-atmosphere systems.
