As part of community outreach and sustainable development initiatives, a field trip was organized in the San Rafael Commune with the aim of strengthening good mining practices, particularly those related to environmental management and occupational safety, thereby contributing to more responsible and sustainable mining development.
The activity was attended by students Jesús Zambrano and Juan Carlos Barros, from the Petroleum Engineering program at ESPOL, under the tutelage of P.hD. Danilo Arcentales and M.Sc. Cindy Goyburo, plus the management of M.Sc. Freddy Carrión, Coordinator of Petroleum Program Relations. During the workshop, the level of knowledge and application of safe practices by local miners in the course of their productive activities was evaluated.
This initiative is part of the project “Introduction and implementation of good mining practices in the community of San Rafael,” led by Ph.D. (c) Daniel Garcés, whose purpose is to strengthen the operational capacities of miners in key areas such as occupational safety and responsible environmental management. The assessment identified gaps, risks, and opportunities for improvement in the procedures currently in use, with the aim of reducing accidents, minimizing negative impacts, and promoting a culture of prevention in the mining community.

The project also includes the preparation of a technical report that will include protocols and recommendations for good mining practices, designed to facilitate their progressive implementation in the daily activities of miners, contributing to safer, more responsible, and sustainable mining.
Reaffirming the academic and social commitment to community well-being and environmental protection, this initiative is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals:
SDG 3: Good health and well-being
SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth
SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production
