Current Events: Boosting Oil Production in 2026
Ecuador's hydrocarbon sector has recorded significant progress at the beginning of this year. Thanks to the discovery and startup of three new wells in the province of Sucumbíos—specifically in the Tarapoa and Charapa blocks—an addition of more than 4,000 barrels per day (bpd) to national production is projected.
These projects, led by companies Andes Petroleum and Gran Tierra Energy, have confirmed the commercial viability of key wells such as Conejo A-01 (2,100 bpd) and Conejo A-02 (1,500 bpd). This increase represents a strategic relief against the natural decline of mature fields in the Amazon region.
Technical Analysis: The Vision of M.Sc. Freddy Carrión
The Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) contributes to the national technical debate through M.Sc. Freddy Carrión, a research professor specialized in Petroleum Engineering. In a recent interview with Teleamazonas, the professor emphasized that these findings are a necessary step for the country's economic stability.
"The country's goal should be to increase production; therefore, this news is a success, as it will allow us to move forward in meeting that objective," Carrión highlighted during the interview.

However, for the ESPOL researcher, the industry's challenges go beyond immediate extraction. Carrión maintains that to guarantee a sustainable impact, Ecuador must focus on:
Attracting Foreign Investment: Encouraging the arrival of American, Canadian, and European companies with high technological capacity.
Increasing Reserves: Implementing strategies that seek not only to extract crude oil but also to discover new reservoirs to ensure the country’s energy future.
Commitment to the Industry
At FICT, we reaffirm our role as leaders in technical and scientific training for the energy sector. The active participation of our faculty in public debate ensures that the development of the country's natural resources is guided by academic rigor and innovation.
