International Model Class Enhances Sanitation Training in Civil Engineering

Mirror class

ESPOL, through its Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT), conducted a mirror class in collaboration with the University of Commercial Sciences (UCC) in Nicaragua as part of its international academic cooperation initiatives in the field of civil engineering. This event facilitated interaction between students and faculty from both institutions, promoting the exchange of knowledge in a shared virtual environment.

Participants in the activity included Civil Engineering students from UCC, master’s students in the Master’s in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Construction and Sanitation at ESPOL, as well as faculty members from both universities. The session was led by Roxana González and Maxwell Altamirano, who discussed conventional wastewater treatment systems, incorporating the use of a bio-ecological system simulator based on reed wetlands and aquaculture.

The mirror class helped strengthen the participants’ technical skills while creating a space for analyzing real-world issues in the Latin American context. It also fostered cultural and academic exchange, in line with ESPOL’s institutional mission to promote internationalization and the comprehensive education of its students.

The initiative was organized by Priscila Valverde, Cristian Salas, Karla Filián, Marlene Córdova, and Maxwell Altamirano, in collaboration with both institutions. Activities of this kind help strengthen international academic networks and foster sustainable solutions in the field of sanitation, with a direct impact on the training of professionals and the development of the sector.
