International mobility enhances engineering education and fosters a global perspective on the mining sector

Mobility: Adrián Álvarez

The international academic exchange experience offers ESPOL students a comprehensive educational opportunity. Adrián Patricio Álvarez Reyes, now an ESPOL alumni, participated in the Erasmus+ KA171 program, spending a semester at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, in 2025, where he strengthened his academic skills and enhanced his professional prospects in the field of mining engineering.

His motivation for participating in this program stemmed from a desire to take on new challenges and gain knowledge in an international setting. According to the student, “stepping out of your comfort zone is one of the best ways to learn,” and he also highlighted the support provided by the academic coordinators of the Mining program in the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) at ESPOL, who encourage students to take advantage of opportunities that contribute to the development of global competencies.

During his stay, the academic experience involved adapting to an educational system with a theoretical and analytical focus, which required organization, planning, and academic commitment. Adrián noted that this experience strengthened his analytical skills, intercultural communication, and understanding of different teaching methodologies—elements that contribute to a more comprehensive and competitive professional education.

Interacting with faculty members experienced in the mining sector broadened his perspective on career opportunities in the industry, particularly in areas related to mining management and administration. This experience strengthened his interest in contributing to the sector’s development in Ecuador, given the growing need for professionals with strategic skills in this field.

Academic mobility also contributed to his personal growth by immersing him in a diverse cultural environment, fostering adaptability skills and a global perspective on engineering as a key discipline for sustainable development. “Academic mobility allows you to grow, learn from your mistakes, and develop the confidence needed to tackle future professional opportunities anywhere in the world,” the student noted.

These types of initiatives promoted by ESPOL at FICT, through its internationalization programs, strengthen the training of professionals with global competencies, capable of contributing to the country’s development and the creation of sustainable solutions through engineering.
