FICT researcher receives international recognition at conference organized by MDPI Land

Divar Castro Rodas, MSc., a doctoral student at the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) and researcher at the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT), was recognized for Best Oral Presentation during his participation in The 2nd International Electronic Conference on Land, organized by the scientific journal MDPI Land.

The conference was held virtually on September 4 and 5, 2025, Swiss time, and brought together researchers from around the world. In this international academic forum, which featured the presentation of hundreds of scientific papers, the study presented by the doctoral researcher was recognized for its quality.

The winning paper, titled 'A Comparison of Supervised Classification Algorithms in Guayaquil Land Use and Land Cover Data: An Evaluation with Landsat and MapBiomas,' presents a comparative analysis of supervised classification algorithms applied to the study of land use and land cover in Guayaquil, providing scientific tools for urban planning and environmental management. Divar Castro is pursuing a doctoral program under the supervision of Andrés Velástegui Montoya, Ph.D. His participation in this event is part of the academic and research activities included in his doctoral training.

This international recognition contributes to the positioning of the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) and ESPOL in the global scientific arena, reaffirming their commitment to high-impact research and the generation of applied knowledge.

The research presented is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities, and SDG 15: Life on land, by providing scientific tools for territorial planning and ecosystem conservation.
