On July 28, 2026, ESPOL’s Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) participated in the second edition of the international training program “Application of New Methodologies and Technologies for Water Supply in Ibero-America and the Caribbean,” through the presentation “Utilization of Mine Water for Industrial Use and Water Supply,” delivered by our faculty members, Paúl Carrión, Ph.D., and Silvia Loaiza, Ph.D. The event was held virtually and had an international reach, with the participation of approximately 80 people from Latin America and the Caribbean.
The aim of the presentation was to introduce technical strategies, case studies, and technologies for the treatment and sustainable use of mine water. The presentation addressed advanced, conventional, and passive alternatives for managing this resource in contexts related to mining activities.
As part of the presentation, case studies from Ecuador were analyzed to demonstrate alternatives for mine water management and its potential uses. These examples helped explore the relationship between mining activities, environmental management, and water needs associated with the energy transition.
FICT’s participation in this international program made it possible to share knowledge and experiences developed in Ecuador with participants from Ibero-America and the Caribbean. It also contributed to the exchange of knowledge regarding the challenges of water security and sustainable water management in mining contexts.
This forum for international cooperation and training strengthens ESPOL’s participation in initiatives related to water resource management and applied research in geotechnical and environmental fields.
