FICT promotes iPEER certification to strengthen teacher development and quality education

Orientation Session for iPEER Certification

On Friday, August 14, 2026, the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) hosted a presentation on the International Professional Engineering Educator Registry (iPEER) certification, with support from the Comprehensive Center for Educational Services (CISE). The event was aimed at professors, analysts, and research technicians, with the goal of providing information and guidelines to help them move forward in the process of obtaining this international certification.

The initiative is part of the EENTITLE (Ecuadorian Engineering Educators Capacity Development and Recognition) project, co-funded by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ program. The project seeks to strengthen the development and recognition of engineering educators’ competencies, in accordance with the international classification of occupations established by the United Nations (UN) and the International Labor Organization (ILO).

The iPEER certification, offered by the ENTER Network, establishes international standards for the practice of engineering education based on a comprehensive evaluation of professionals’ career paths and competencies. The process helps identify strengths and opportunities for improvement, while also promoting professional development and the continuous improvement of teaching practices.

Factors considered for certification include academic rank, teaching and research experience, pedagogical training, professional development, and achievements. Based on the evidence submitted, participants can be placed at one of six professional levels: Educator, Effective Educator, Outcomes-based Educator, Scholarly Educator, Education Researcher, and Senior Education Researcher.

Currently, 18 FICT faculty members hold iPEER certification. With guidance from CISE, the faculty seeks to expand participation in its academic community to validate faculty members’ experience and competencies, thereby strengthening their professional development opportunities and their integration into an international network of engineering educators.

The promotion of this certification aligns with FICT’s strategy to strengthen quality education and with ESPOL’s institutional commitment to developing teaching capabilities. Furthermore, it contributes to strengthening competencies that directly impact teaching and learning processes in higher education within STEM programs.
