As part of the community service requirements for the Petroleum Engineering program, students and faculty from the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) conducted a field trip to the San José de Ancón parish with the goal of assessing the heritage potential of historic oil wells and providing technical guidance for their preservation and enhancement.
The field trip took place on July 3 and included a technical visit to eight oil wells that are over 100 years old. Two students from the Petroleum Engineering program participated in the activity, along with professors Andrés Guzmán and Freddy Carrión—acting as the tutor and coordinator of community service activities, respectively—who led the tour and guided the technical analysis of the sites evaluated.
Two representatives from the Decentralized Autonomous Government (GAD) of the San José de Ancón Parish also accompanied the group during the visit, strengthening the collaboration between academia and local government. This collaboration made it possible to analyze the potential of these wells for inclusion in a proposed heritage route that would help preserve the historical memory of oil production in the parish.
Community service internships provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, strengthening their professional skills and making technical contributions that benefit communities. In this case, the initiative aims to contribute to the preservation of industrial heritage and the development of proposals that promote tourism, education, and the conservation of Ecuador’s oil legacy.
Through these types of activities, FICT reaffirms its commitment to the well-rounded education of its students and to engaging with society, promoting projects that integrate academic knowledge with the needs of the region, in line with ESPOL’s mission to generate impactful solutions for the country’s sustainable development.
