On April 16, 2026, the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) at the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) participated in a corporate event organized by Holcim, through its Geocycle division, focused on sustainability, the circular economy, and decarbonization in the construction industry. The event was held in person and brought together stakeholders from the business and academic sectors.
The meeting aimed to explore and analyze the initiatives promoted by Holcim under the current collaboration agreement with ESPOL. During the session, the company presented its business strategy focused on reducing its carbon footprint, improving energy efficiency, and ensuring responsible waste management, as part of its commitment to a more sustainable industry.
Through Geocycle, specific cases of co-processing municipal and industrial waste were presented, along with examples of industrial symbiosis and public-private partnerships. These practices enable the transformation of waste into raw materials for cement and concrete production, contributing to waste recovery and resource optimization.
ESPOL’s participation in this event strengthened the exchange of applied knowledge between academia and industry and solidified inter-institutional ties with the business sector. Initiatives like this contribute to the training of students and faculty in innovative solutions aligned with current challenges in sustainability and industrial development.
