Sustainable Water Management in the Poultry Sector: Applied Research with a Productive Impact

The Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral signed an annual contract with the company Avícola San Isidro (AVISID S.A.). The purpose of this agreement is to conduct hydrogeological studies to identify areas of groundwater accumulation by collecting field data to determine the quantity and quality of water resources, with a focus on their sustainable use.

As part of this collaboration, interventions have been carried out at six poultry farms, where the availability of surface and groundwater was assessed. As a result, six successful well drillings were completed, along with optimizations to their design. In addition, solutions such as earthen dams and levees were implemented, contributing to aquifer recharge and strengthening integrated water resource management in the productive sector. The activities carried out under this partnership have been strengthened by the participation of experts from the international CYTED network “Nature-based Solutions for Integrated Water Management in Vulnerable Communities (SbN-GIA),” researchers from the Center for Water and Sustainable Development (CADS), and Rey Juan Carlos University.

The joint work between academia and the company also resulted in the scientific publication “Integral analysis of water resources applying nature-based solutions to meet the demands of an industrial poultry sector,” indexed in SCOPUS in the Q1/D1 quartile.

Participants in this initiative included Paúl Carrión Mero, Ph.D., Dean of FICT; Mirka Arcentales Rosado, M.Sc. (c), a researcher at FICT; Fernando Morante Carballo, Ph.D., Director of CIPAT; Emily Sánchez Zambrano, Ph.D. (c), and Jairo Dueñas Tovar, M.Sc., researchers at CIPAT; as well as Luis Domínguez Granja, Ph.D., Director of CADS, and Boris Apolo Masache, M.Sc., researcher at CADS. This project demonstrates the collaboration between academia, industry, and applied research, generating sustainable solutions for the poultry sector and contributing to the country’s development.
