With a space designed to inspire reflection and promote action, ESPOL’s Sustainable Development Club (CDS) played a prominent role at Sostenia by ESPOL 2026, held on July 21 and 22 at the Hilton Colón Hotel in Guayaquil. Through an interactive booth, the Club shared with attendees the work it has carried out since its creation in 2019, demonstrating how student leadership can drive impactful initiatives both on and off campus.
Over the two-day event, students, faculty, representatives from companies, organizations, public institutions, and the general public learned about the Club’s key initiatives related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These included environmental education and awareness campaigns, volunteer activities, community engagement projects, and training programs that have strengthened a culture of sustainability at ESPOL.
One of the main attractions at the booth was an interactive experience that invited visitors to calculate their ecological footprint based on their consumption habits, diet, transportation, and lifestyle. At the end of the exercise, each participant discovered how many Earths would be needed if all of humanity lived in the same way, prompting reflection on the impact of everyday decisions and reinforcing a key message: we have only one planet, and caring for it depends on the actions we take starting today.
The event also provided a valuable opportunity to reconnect with the community that has supported the Club’s growth over the years. Active members, alumni, strategic partners, and collaborators shared experiences, strengthened ties, and renewed their commitment to promoting sustainability, demonstrating that the Club’s impact extends beyond the college years.
The Club’s participation was led by its advisor, Johanna Zambrano Anchundia, M.Sc., a professor in the Petroleum Engineering program at ESPOL, who has worked to strengthen the student group through leadership opportunities, collaborative work, and community engagement.
Through this participation, ESPOL’s Sustainable Development Club reaffirms its commitment to continue promoting initiatives that inspire more people and institutions to work together toward a more sustainable future, demonstrating that collaboration and student leadership are essential to bringing about positive change in society.
