ESPOL Strengthens Training in Petroleum Studies Through an International Model Class

ESPOL-IUPSM Mirror Class

The Petroleum Engineering program at the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) of the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) held a “Mirror Class” in collaboration with the Petroleum Engineering program at the Instituto Universitario Politécnico Santiago Mariño (IUPSM), Maracaibo campus, Venezuela. The event took place virtually on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, as part of an international academic collaboration initiative.

The session, titled “Practical Applications of Special Well Logs in the Oil Industry,” was linked to the courses Formation Evaluation I at ESPOL and Log Interpretation at IUPSM. The class was taught by Evelyn Quintero, an engineer and professor at IUPSM, and coordinated by Andrés Guzmán, M.Sc., an engineer and professor of Formation Evaluation I in ESPOL’s Petroleum Engineering program.

The Mirror Class aims to strengthen students’ education through the exchange of academic and professional experiences, as well as to expose them to real-world applications of special open-hole well logs. In this way, the initiative complements the content covered in the classroom with knowledge and experiences related to professional practice.

This session marks the first part of the academic exchange between the two institutions. As part of the ongoing initiative, a second session will be held in which Mr. Guzmán from ESPOL will participate as a guest lecturer in a class for IUPSM students, thereby completing the reciprocal nature of this Mirror Class.

The initiative reflects FICT-ESPOL’s ongoing commitment to providing specialized training for its students through international academic cooperation programs, which allow students to interact with faculty and gain exposure to educational and professional contexts from around the world.
