Civil engineering students from ESPOL take fourth place in a national hydraulic design competition

Entry in the 3rd Hydraulic Design Competition

Civil engineering students from the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) at the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) took fourth place in the finals of the 3rd Hydraulic Design Competition, organized by the company Plastigama Wavin. The final gala took place on April 17, 2026, in the city of Guayaquil, with the participation of the top teams from across the country.

This result was achieved following a competitive process that included evaluation stages beginning in November 2025, during which the team secured a spot among the six finalists out of a total of 40 participating groups. The final round assessed the technical performance, innovation, and feasibility of the submitted proposals.

The project, focused on implementing eco-efficient technologies for water management in rural educational institutions, proposes comprehensive solutions to improve access to drinking water, wastewater treatment, and flood mitigation. Additionally, the proposal integrates green infrastructure and spaces designated for school gardens, promoting an environmental and educational approach that directly benefits nearly 100 students.

The team consisted of students Génesis Cruel, Diego Zúñiga, Eliana Alvarado, Karolayn Gaibor, and Bryan Alvear, under the guidance of Rafael Cabrera García, M.Sc. Their participation reflects the institution’s commitment to training professionals capable of proposing sustainable solutions to real-world environmental challenges.
