As part of Module 3 of the SIKA Course, civil engineering students from ESPOL’s Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) took a technical tour of SIKA’s facilities in Durán on June 5. The activity complemented the academic content covered in class by providing hands-on experience with real-world applications used in the construction industry.
During the visit, participants deepened their knowledge of structural repair mortars, identifying their main characteristics, uses, and benefits in the rehabilitation and maintenance of concrete structures. They also learned about solutions used in real-world projects, strengthening their understanding of technical concepts related to the durability and restoration of infrastructure.
The training was led by Marcelo Jarrín, a product engineer at SIKA, who shared specialized knowledge on the properties and applications of these materials. The event was also supported by FICT through Nadia Lagasca, an engineering instructor, and Carola Zavala, an architecture professor in the program.
The partnership between ESPOL and SIKA helps develop technical skills among future civil engineers, exposing them to the technologies, materials, and methodologies currently used in the construction industry. These experiences better prepare students to address challenges related to the maintenance, rehabilitation, and sustainability of infrastructure.
