Rey Juan Carlos University donates equipment for a project in Manglaralto as part of an international cooperation initiative

Delivery of Donated Equipment

Joselyne Solórzano, Ph.D. (c), coordinator of the Geological Engineering Program at the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) of the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL), made an academic visit to Rey Juan Carlos University, where Professor Francisco Javier Montalván, Ph.D., presented equipment valued at approximately $10,000, which will be donated to the outreach project “Water Sowing, Harvesting, and Reuse for Sustainability (Phase II).”

This project is led by Josué Briones, Ph.D. (c), and Paúl Carrión, Ph.D., and is being carried out in the Manglaralto parish (Santa Elena, Ecuador), under the coordination of the ESPOL Outreach Dean’s Office.

This international cooperation is part of the collaborative project titled “Determination of Soil Moisture and Permeability for the Identification of Preferred Recharge Sites Using Nature-Based Solutions (NBS),” carried out by Rey Juan Carlos University and the Center for Research and Applied Projects in Geosciences (CIPAT-ESPOL), with the participation of the CYTED NBS-GIA Network—Nature-Based Solutions for Integrated Water Management in Vulnerable Communities. This initiative aims to identify preferred areas for coastal aquifer recharge using Nature-Based Solutions.

Dr. Montalván, a tenured professor at Rey Juan Carlos University, developed a plan for participation and collaboration together with Joselyne Solórzano, an engineer, which will be implemented between 2026 and 2027. This collaboration aims to strengthen the sustainability of the groundwater supply managed by the Manglaralto Water Board by integrating an international cooperation network that contributes to strengthening community-based water resource management.
