The Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL), through the Faculty of Earth Sciences Engineering (FICT) and the Center for Research and Applied Projects in Earth Sciences (CIPAT), held the event “Review of a Proposal for the Utilization of Municipal Solid Waste in the Provinces of Guayas and Los Ríos,” on Thursday, April 16, 2026, in a hybrid format from Room 02 of the FICT Dean’s Office and via the Zoom platform.
The main objective of the meeting was to review a proposal submitted by the Swedish company Energy Saving Solutions Scandinavia, focused on developing a project for the utilization of municipal solid waste in nine cantons of the province of Guayas and one in the province of Los Ríos, promoting innovative solutions in energy efficiency and environmental management.
During the session, the CIPAT team, together with representatives from FICT and FCNM, presented a technical proposal for the physical and chemical characterization of municipal solid waste. This analysis will enable the identification of utilization alternatives under a circular economy approach, contributing to the reduction of environmental impact at final disposal sites.
As a result, a second meeting was held between the parties to explore the project’s scope, activities, and deliverables in greater depth, thereby laying the groundwork for a potential international collaboration focused on sustainable waste management in Ecuador.
This initiative continues the solid waste research line launched in 2024 under the tripartite agreement between ESPOL, ESPOLTECH, and the Guayas Prefecture, strengthening the generation of applied knowledge for the development of sustainable solutions in the country.
The event was attended by international and national representatives, including Drs. Giussepe and Zafar, along with Camilo Zárate and Jorge Montiel from Energy Saving Solutions; Jorge Mendoza, Director of Public Services for the Santa Lucía Municipal GAD; as well as Fernando Morante, Ph.D., director of CIPAT-ESPOL. Also participating were Lady Bravo, María Fernanda Jaya, and Viviana Risco, CIPAT technicians; Josué Briones, professor at FICT; and Heydi Roa, professor at FCNM.
