Connecting academia with industry: partnerships that transform civil engineering education

Academia and industry are joining forces to strengthen civil engineering education

It happens when theory meets practice. When academia listens to industry. And when both work together to build something.

This is how the meeting between ESPOL’s Faculty Geosciences Engineering (FICT) and the company Boonker Construcciones unfolded. It is a space to align visions, identify opportunities, and reinforce a key idea: an academic education connected to the realities of the construction sector.

The goal was clear: to strengthen ties that bring students closer to their professional future from the earliest stages.

During the session, specific opportunities were discussed, such as:

  • pre-professional internships

  • employability

  • development of undergraduate and graduate projects

  • participation in joint initiatives

  • analysis of industry needs

More than just a list of actions, the goal was to integrate real-world experience into academic training.

Because understanding the industry is an essential part of learning engineering.

These types of partnerships help strengthen skills aligned with current market demands, promoting a more applied, up-to-date education focused on solving real-world problems.

The impact is clear: better opportunities for students, stronger connections for faculty, and an education that responds to the challenges of the real world.

Because education cannot move forward on its own. It is built together.
