Patent Developed by ESPOL and UTE Receives International Recognition in Tokyo

Ecuadorian Innovation Honored in Japan: Hydromechanical Device for Measuring Concrete Shrinkage

The patent titled “Hydromechanical Concrete Shrinkage Measurement Device” was presented at the World Genius Convention & Education Expo 2026, held in Tokyo, Japan, in May 2026. The event was attended in person by representatives from the Equinoccial Technological University (UTE), as part of an inter-institutional collaboration with ESPOL.

The device, identified as PCT/IB2024/061628, was developed to measure concrete shrinkage using a low-cost, portable hydromechanical system that can be used in both laboratory and field settings. This solution allows for the practical and accessible evaluation of material deformations, offering an alternative to traditional measurement methods.

During the exhibition, the patent was showcased in the Ecuador pavilion and received a Gold Award and a Special Award, standing out for its contribution to the field of materials and structural monitoring in civil engineering. These accolades reflect the impact and international reach of technological developments originating from Ecuadorian academia.

Participation was made possible through collaboration among institutions, which enabled the international presentation of the development by a UTE faculty member. Furthermore, the event facilitated exchanges with stakeholders in the scientific and technological fields, strengthening opportunities for cooperation in applied research.

These types of initiatives contribute to the development of safer and more sustainable infrastructure and demonstrate the value of academic partnerships in generating innovative solutions that have an impact on the construction sector.
