Researchers and students affiliated with the Faculty of Geosciences Engineering (FICT) participated in the 9th Geosciences Conference, held at the National Polytechnic School in Quito. This national academic conference brought together experts, researchers, professionals, technicians, and students to present and discuss the latest scientific and technological advances in various fields of Geosciences.
FICT was represented by Victoria Rosado, Eng., MSc (c), Maurizio Mulas, Ph.D., and Valeria Vaca, Eng., MSc (c), who shared research findings related to water management, geological hazards, and volcanic dynamics in the Galápagos Islands. Their presence contributed to the exchange of knowledge and the strengthening of scientific research conducted at ESPOL on topics of strategic importance to the country.
Victoria Rosado gave an oral presentation on the paper “2D Hydrological-Hydraulic Modeling of Surface Flow Dynamics in Volcanic Island Watersheds: A Case Study of Santa Cruz, Galápagos” and also presented the poster “Morphometric Prioritization of Watersheds for Water Management and Sustainable Agriculture in Santa Cruz, Galápagos.” Both research projects provide tools for improved water resource management and sustainable planning in island territories.
For his part, Maurizio Mulas, Ph.D., presented the study “Internal Structure of a Monogenetic Cone: A Case Study of Granillo Rojo (Santa Cruz, Galápagos),” while Valeria Vaca, Eng., MSc (c), presented the paper “Design of a Multi-Hazard Geological Framework on Volcanic Islands: A Case Study of the Galápagos Islands.” These studies address key aspects for understanding geological processes and managing natural hazards in volcanic environments.
The 9th Geosciences Conference is one of the country’s leading forums for scientific dissemination in this field of knowledge. The event was sponsored by the National Polytechnic School, the Geophysical Institute, and the Institute for Research and Development (IRD), and featured the participation of universities, research centers, and national and international companies.
FICT’s presence at this conference reflects ESPOL’s commitment to generating scientific knowledge, training talent, and strengthening academic partnerships that contribute to the sustainable use of natural resources, risk management, and decision-making based on scientific evidence.
